Things you can’t quantify September 9, 2008

Distrust utilitarians who quantify and attempt to reduce success and failure to numbers. Numbers will never justify existence. Indeed most of the things you and I think important, and dear, cannot be quantified; a child’s holding your hand and saying, “You are the best daddy in the world,” a field of dandelions in the spring, the serrated edge of hatred, a cold day in a graveyard white with snow, in short almost all the things that stitch lives into tapestries. By all means teach skills, reading and writing, for they are important. But resist the urge to inflate what you do.–Sam Pickering
