The middle school I attended, it was a Catholic school run by my parish, has been closed for quite awhile now. Actually it closed down one year after I graduated from there. And now the building is mainly being used for the church’s CCD classes, church office space, and for bingo and functions and such. But recently, due to finances, there’s been talk of selling the building because it costs something close to $60,000 a year to keep it. But our pastor says he’s looking for other ways to rent it out or earn money so that it can be kept.
And the first thing that came to my mind was, wouldn’t that make an awesome community center? or a charter school, or something like that. It has a gym, a kitchen/cafeteria, classroom space, a library, bathrooms, an office. You really would not have to change anything about it so that it could function in this way. It’s in a not so good area of town; where young people could probably use a more positive space to hang out. Makes me wish I knew more about those types of things and how they get funding. I think it’s doable, I just don’t really know how you go about doing it and if it’s worth it.
